Job Description : Working as a valuable member of the patient care team and under the direction of a Registered Nurse/ Registered Practical Nurse the HCA assists in providing a range of health care services to support the care of patients, their families and their environment.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITES

Under the direction and supervision of nursing, (RN/RPN) assist with patient care by:

  • Provide constant observation of a patient in keeping with CHEO’s Sitter policy
  • Assist with restraining a patient if required
  • Accompany a patient to the playroom or other requested location
  • Observe and report the patient’s physical and psychological status to nursing staff
  • Assist in patient lift and transfers along with positioning, turning and ambulating patients
  • Weighing patients
  • Feeding, bathing/grooming and toileting
  • Assist with observing and noting input and output
  • Obtaining and labelling non-invasive specimens as directed (i.e. urine)
  • Calming restless patients, maintaining safety devices as ordered
  • Assist with the preparing of deceased patients and assisting with transport to the morgue

Reviews and follows the plan of care for patients by:

  • Documenting on patient flow sheets and other appropriate documentation tools as required

Assumes responsibility for maintenance of knowledge and skill by:

  • Participating in indirect activities related to patient care and services provided (i.e. staff meetings, educational in-services etc.) as requested

  • Participating in hospital and unit-related programs and other educational activities such as, but not exclusive to:

  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention

  • Accreditation

  • Occupational Health & Safety including WHMIS, Fire Safety, Infection Control.

  • Staff meetings/Unit council/Shift Change meetings

  • Orientation and training of new staff

  • Respond to patient/family inquiries (including answering patient call bells) and refer them to the patient’s nurse or Doctor where necessary

  • Assist in the preparation/stocking of supplies, material and equipment for use by professional staff

  • Maintain good public relations with patients and families by introducing themselves and greeting patients and families

  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations as well as all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety

  • Respond to Hospital Codes as indicated in the Code policies

  • Responds to Unit Emergency situations to assist professional staff as directed.

Other Related Duties

  • Check/Record med fridge temperature and respond accordingly
  • Download glucometers
  • Carry out such stocking requirements that may be required for safe patient care
  • Carry out those environmental tasks necessary to provide a safe and infection free environment for patients, families and staff as required by individual areas needs (in-between case cleaning, medication fridge cleaning and just in time resolutions to environmental situations)
  • Any other duties that may be deemed necessary to support quality patient care
  • Check department equipment and report issues to Biomed or Physical Plant
  • Knowledge of patient positioning for surgery and positioning aids used
  • Assisting with movement of an unconscious patients
  • Proper handling of biohazardous waste
  • Good communication skills working in a team atmosphere
  • Assist with PPI (Parental Presence for Induction) program
  • Proper handling of sterile product
  • Works well individually and in a team

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
  • Personal Support Worker / Health Care Aide certificate, or 2nd year RPN students, or 3rd year BScN students, or IEN (Internationally Educated Nurses) (Essential)
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills in English (Essential)
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills (Essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team (Essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and carry out written and verbal instructions (Essential)
  • Ability to respond to physical demands (i.e. heavy lifts and transfers) (Essential)
  • Bilingual (English/ French) (preferred)
