Job Description SummaryThe end date for this role is 7/23/2024 or with the return of the incumbent.Reporting to the Patient Care Manager and working in collaboration with the Chief of Professional Practice and Nursing or designate, provides wound/ ostomy/ continence care consultation and educational services within the designated program. The Educator, Wound, Ostomy & Continence Care confers and collaborates with the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Wound, Ostomy and Continence, with interdisciplinary team members and with other Nurses Specialized in Wound, Ostomy and Continence (NSWOC) in British Columbia to develop, plan, implement and evaluate consistent, standards based wound/ ostomy/ continence care services and education programs for all staff. Ensures that evidence based wound/ ostomy/ continence care clinical interventions are incorporated into client care planning to develop capacity and competence in wound/ ostomy/ continence care services. This job requires local area travel (which can be via personal vehicle or by the shuttle service) between the various PHC sites. Local area travel in the ordinary course of work is required for designated positions that cover Residential sites. Qualifications / Skills and EducationEducationCurrent practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, plus two (2) years recent, related advanced wound/ ostomy/ continence care experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Successful completion of the Wound, Ostomy, Continence Institute of Canada (NSWOCC) - Wound, Ostomy, Continence- Education Program (WOC-EP) or the Wound, Ostomy Continence Nurse Certificate (WOCN).Skills and AbilitiesAbility to teach, coach, and provide clinical support. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures appropriate for the area of service. Ability to identify learning needs and develop educational programs. Ability to provide and/or develop resource materials, including educational materials. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of adult education principles. Ability to lead a group. Comprehensive knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a client and family centered model of care. Comprehensive knowledge of the BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards for Nursing Practice. Comprehensive knowledge of evidence based nursing practice related to designated clinical area. Comprehensive knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in patient care. Broad knowledge of research process and methodology. Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Ability to apply decision making and analytical skills. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to provide leadership and work direction. Duties and ResponsibilitiesProvides consultative services to health care professionals for clients with complex wound/ ostomy care needs by conducting skin/ wound/ ostomy examinations, interviewing, reviewing charts and collaborating with other health care professionals. Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates educational programs within the clinical area, in collaboration with the Chief of Professional Practice and Nursing and the Clinical Nurse Specialist for Wound Care and other nursing staff. Assesses requests for programs, validates learning needs through needs assessment and consultation, develops proposals and new programs as required to meet learning needs, coordinates and schedules educational activities, identifies outcome indicators, and evaluates and revises programs accordingly. Develops tools to evaluate the effectiveness of resources and educational programs. Demonstrates and promotes expertise and provides leadership in nursing practice through methods such as reviewing literature in the specialty area, consulting with experts, evaluating clinical practice, role modeling direct client care skills to staff, participating in case conferencing for complex cases and providing theory based information to problem solve complex wound/ ostomy care cases. Provides direct care to clients with wound/ ostomy care needs. Performs advanced nursing skills within the area of expertise. Reviews policies, procedures, and reference materials and makes recommendations for changes. Updates as approved. Promotes the use of research findings into practice by incorporating information into policies, procedures, reference materials, educational materials, and teaching sessions. Participates in research activities related to wound/ ostomy care and in the development of quality improvement initiatives as requested. Participates in quality improvement and risk management activities for assigned client population through methods such as evaluating the effect of changes in nursing practice; generating recommendations for alternative approaches to nursing practice and taking corrective action and recommending changes to selected policies and procedures. Supports nursing practices across PHC by participating in nursing and community committees, designing, implementing, and evaluating PHC-wide educational programs. Participates as a member of a teaching group. Teaches other members of the multidisciplinary team as required. Provides input to the Chief of Professional Practice and Nursing in the Performance Planning and Coaching process as requested by a staff member and/or Leader. Provides input and recommendations to the Chief of Professional Practice and Nursing regarding physical space, equipment, supplies, and staffing requirements. Sets measurable personal professional development goals and objectives, through such methods as maintaining and updating own knowledge of clinical and professional development within area of practice, and developing plan in collaboration with the Manager, for professional development; reviews progress to ensure that goals are achieved within established time frames as required. Performs other related duties as assigned.
