Position Description

Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Counsellor is responsible for providing individual and group therapy to participants and their families accessing Binesi Waziswan - Healing & Treatment Services at Kenora Chiefs Advisory. The Counsellor leads the clinical work for their assigned clients, ensuring they have access to both mainstream and traditional modalities of mental health support. They will carry out the child/youth’s wellness plans, encompassing the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual needs and goals of the child/youth. The Counsellor will work collaboratively with a team of providers to ensure the success of youth participating in the program.

Term: Full time - 1 FTE

Hours: Must be open to flexible hours

Location: 240 Veterans Drive, 3rd Floor, Kenora, Ontario

Reports to: Clinical Manager

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Work with the care team to carry out the therapeutic work involved in the participants’ wellness plan, within a bicultural framework of care
  • Provide counselling to clients and families
  • Develop and facilitate group counselling and programming, within a curriculum grounded in the 7 Grandfather Teachings
  • Participate in case conferences with mutual providers and families/caregivers to ensure communication across the care team
  • Monitor clients’ progress, goals and needs throughout the course of treatment
  • Facilitate connections to appropriate culture-based interventions, as needed
  • Support Care Coordinators in the development of discharge plans
  • Communicate and provide support to clients’ families/caregivers as needed
  • Adhere to KCA’s policies and procedures, in accordance to the KCA Code of Ethics
  • Consult the Management Team for supervision
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and trainings

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 1-year experience in the mental health field working with children, youth and/or families
  • Experience and/or knowledge of Anishinaabe traditional approaches to healing and wellness
  • Experience counselling children, youth and/or families
  • Excellent rapport and ability to work with youth
  • Ability to develop strong working relationships with service providers across sectors
  • Excellent skills in the following areas: teamwork, computer, networking, interpersonal, presentation and communication (written & oral)
  • Knowledge of the Anishinaabe culture and language, and experience working in First Nation communities is an asset
  • Ability to demonstrate and work through a lens of sensitivity to diversity related to race, religion, culture, cognitive functioning, poverty, sexual orientation and gender identity

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, or Occupational Therapy from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Social Service Worker diploma combined with experience will be considered
  • Eligible for membership in your professional organization

OTHER POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle
  • Must be willing to Relocate to Kenora,ON
  • CPR & First-Aid, or willingness to be certified
  • Current satisfactory criminal reference check with vulnerable sector search
