Position :General Labourer
Department :Maintenance
Reports to : Property Manager
Rate :$21 - $25/hr
Position Requirements : The General Labourer is responsible for upkeep and maintenance of all vehicles, enclosures, and facilities throughout the zoo property, maintaining the quality standards of accredited zoological practices. Responsibilities include assisting with mechanical duties, welding, repair work, carpentry, yard work, building maintenance, renovations and related duties as required. The General Labourer may be required to work with or within other departments. The General Labourer will adhere to all health and safety regulations, legislation and policies as reviewed during the orientation period and as directed by GVZoo staff.
Key Responsibilities to assist with : 1) Assisting with project completion adhering to prescribed deadlines.
2) Perform standard cleaning activities, including janitorial.
3) Perform minor fixture jobs, such as repairing and replacing broken locks, changing light bulbs, repairing fences and gates, and more.
4) Cleaning the Zoo grounds, may include collecting trash, mowing lawns, leaf blowing, etc.
5) Assist with installation of appliances, office equipment, etc.
6) Assist with building maintenance.
7) Assist with carpentry projects
a) Proficient in reading blueprints
b) Accuracy in measuring and calculating materials required
8) Assist with heavy duty mechanics
a) Diagnosing all phases of vehicle and equipment repair
b) Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on all equipment, generators, compressors, drills, small tools and miscellaneous equipment of a similar nature.
9) Maintain functionality of safety systems.
10) Adheres to all GVZoo and department policies and practices.
11) Maintain and utilize records and follow established routines and procedures.
12) Observe condition of zoo grounds and equipment and report relevant information as appropriate. Inspect zoo grounds for any hazards to animals, staff and public.
13) Deal in a courteous and professional manner with zoo visitors, contractors, and fellow staff.
14) Follow all GVZoo policy and procedures. Comply with all WCB safety regulations and work safe procedures. Maintain a safe work environment for both staff and general public.
15) Project a professional image while on GVZoo grounds.
16) Perform other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications :
- Highschool diploma or equivalent.
- 3 years relevant work experience in either carpentry or heavy-duty mechanics
- Experience with hand and power tools, and general machinery.
- Experience in performing routine maintenance.
- Ability to multitask and attention to detail.
- Organizational and time management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team.
- Valid Driver’s License
- The above listed tasks are the responsibilities of all Maintenance General Labourers employed by the GVZoo. Maintenance General Labourers are not limited to the tasks listed above and may be required to perform additional tasks as assigned by Management and Supervisors._
This is a permanent full-time contract
