Position Description : ***: This position provides leadership and supervision of the operational activities within the Pharmacy Department. The Pharmacy Supervisor supports and oversees the frontline Pharmacy Technicians and Support staff in the day-to-day functions and addresses any issues related to medication procurement, preparation, dispensing, delivery, sterile and non-sterile compounding, BPMH and pharmacy automation. In collaboration with the pharmacy managers, ensures that the services provided by the department are based on regulatory requirements, best practices and in alignment with the hospital's strategic plan.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Community College Diploma Program in a related field required. Undergraduate degree preferred
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Ontario College of Pharmacists
  • Minimum of 5 years experience as Pharmacy Technician including sterile and non-sterile compounding and experience working with Pharmacy automation
  • Extensive knowledge of hospital pharmacy drug distribution processes including procurement, sterile and non-sterile compounding, pharmacy automation, OCP and Accreditation Canada regulations, NAPRA and ISMP standards required
  • Demonstrated leadership skills. Previous Supervisor or leadership experience preferred
  • Able to adapt to change and lead change management in a fast paced, constantly evolving environment
  • Demonstrated experience with developing and leading safety and quality improvement initiatives
  • Ability to work well in a team with diverse skills, experiences and backgrounds, with good conflict resolution skills
  • Previous experience administering a pharmacy automation system is an asset.
  • Ability to map and design process workflows.
  • Demonstrated teaching and coaching skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload effectively
  • Able to cope with day-to-day problems and effectively problem solve
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail and good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated history of completing tasks on schedule
  • Excellent attendance and work record are required.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Facilitates the efficient operation of the pharmacy department through the development, maintenance, monitoring and evaluation of processes/technologies/automation related to medication procurement, preparation, dispensing and delivery, in collaboration with the Pharmacy Managers and Director. These processes are based on regulatory requirements and best practices
  • Coordinates the development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of pharmacy quality improvement initiatives and policies which are in alignment with best practices and established SJHH mission and vision, in collaboration with the pharmacy managers
  • Assists in training new staff, monitors employee performance, enforces all departmental and corporate policies to ensure staff compliance. Develops and manages staff schedule
  • In collaboration with Pharmacy Manager, supervises staff and follows up with any human resource concerns
  • Ensure that all required medication records are maintained and readily available for audit and inspection purposes.
  • Delegate tasks to pharmacy staff as appropriate and supervise their work.
  • Manage all day to day operations in the department
  • As the Compounding Supervisor, oversee all activities related to non-sterile and sterile compounding. Review OCP, NAPRA and other regulatory requirements and ensure Pharmacy and Pharmacy Technician compliance with these requirements.
  • Supervises all activities related to pharmacy inventory including procuring, receiving, barcoding and storage and ensures compliance with pharmacy regulations
  • Assists Pharmacy Manager to manage all central pharmacy automation, automated dispensing cabinets and pharmacy information system.
  • Provides cross coverage for other Pharmacy Supervisors
  • Performs professional duties of a Pharmacy Technician in order to maintain professional standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists.
  • Participates in internal departmental, corporate, and external committees, as assigned.
  • Carries out other tasks as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager and/or Director
