Controls Engineer / Applied Scientist

Ballard has an immediate opportunity for a Controls Engineer/ Applied Scientist* to join its Lab Equipment Design and Support Operations Team in Burnaby, BC. The successful candidate will apply their strong technical skills to develop fuel cell and fuel cell component testing equipment for Ballard’s state-of-the-art test lab.

Responsibilities

•Supporting and maintaining data acquisition and control software for fuel cell test stands

•Assisting in design of new object-oriented software architectures

•Performing routine software deployment and upgrading tasks

•Assisting with data analysis and presentation

Requirements:

•Degree in any Engineering discipline, or a degree in Computer Science with relevant experience

•3-5 years of experience

Key skills include:

•Experience programming in LabVIEW 

•Experience with communication systems and protocols (CAN, DeviceNet, RS-232, Ethernet/IP, etc.)

•Experience with data acquisition hardware (Beckhoff, NI, WAGO, etc.)

•Controls engineering experience: design and tuning of PID and model-based control loops

•Experience with software version control (eg. Git, SVN, etc)

•Data analysis and data presentation skills

•Broad programming experience: various application types in various languages (C/C++, C#, Java, etc)

•Object-oriented programming experience

•Strong oral and written communication ability

The typical hiring range for this position is CAD$75,000 - CAD$93,000 per annum. In determining total compensation, Ballard considers many factors, including the successful Candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, experience, position location, and internal equity.
