POSITION DESCRIPTION Reporting to the Founder & CEO, Head of Tannery Operations is accountable for development and production of zero-waste, high quality, veg-tanned, industrial fish leather, tanning formulas, quality control, and cost-effective production processes to be deployed at an industrial scale. The Head of Tannery Operations also will be accountable for advising and working with the CEO on the sourcing and testing of fish skin species, and on the application of natural dyes and coatings based on customer requirements and the company’s zero-waste, eco-friendly vision. POSITION DUTIES The Head of Tannery Operations is accountable for the following duties: Leather Tanning & Formulations Learn and apply new leather tanning processes and formulations. Assist in identifying, developing, evaluating, and adjusting environmentally sound and effective veg tanning formula on an ongoing basis. Assist in identifying, developing, evaluating, and adjusting environmentally sound and effective leather dyes. Assist in identifying, developing, evaluating, and adjusting environmentally sound and effective surface treatments, finishes and coatings. Perform, as needed, all processes that transform skins into finished leather. Testing, Reporting, Improving Conduct sampling and analysis to maintain quality standards of raw materials and final product. Compile records and keep track of experimental or analytical results. Prepare production and other reports. Advise on changes needed in processes, inputs, and equipment. Ensure sustainability and best practice of tannery processes. Resolve production problems and introduce measures to improve productivity and product quality, where relevant. Engage in research, development, and innovation pertaining to the business and any appropriate programs and/or challenges that would support 7 Leagues Leather’s development and growth. Machinery & Operations Oversight of tannery operations, including production and supervision of tanning technicians/assistants. Inspection and maintenance and the development of standards, procedures and health and safety measures. Ensure effluent treatment process will enable re-use in the production process and/or safe release of water. Manage production and adapt the schedule to the company's needs. Leather production and/or oversight of all production activities and operations. Development and oversight of all quality assurance processes. Communication & Networking Contact providers for the requisition of raw materials and supplies. Act as technical consultant on tanning and tanning chemistry as needed for company partners. Follow up with clients to ensure satisfaction with the final product. Represent 7 Leagues Leather at industry events/meetings. Keep CEO informed of issues, successes, challenges and changes in operations, production, and product development. Innovation & Professional Development May participate in the commercialization of new products. Keep abreast of innovation and current practice within the tanning industry. Continue professional development as needed to stay current. REQUIRED EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE The Head of Tannery Operations will possess the following education, skills and experience: A minimum of a BSc in Leather Technology from arecognized university program or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least 3 years’ related experience, preferably in a role focused on development and commercialization of environmentally sensitive leather products, tanning formulas (preferably veg tanning) and production processes. Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the development of veg tanning chemistry formulas, leather science, leather sustainability, selection and application of natural dyes and surface coatings and surface coating performance, product testing, quality assurance/control, tanning process design, operations management and supply chain and materials management. Direct experience producing high-quality leather for wholesale and/or retail markets. Manufacturing support, including equipment use and operating procedures, and health and safety of product and machinery. Interest in learning and working on projects targeting positive environmental impact and social good, in addition to a successful commercial application, from the ground up. Ability to train, mentor and supervise apprentices. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. Experience with procurement of tanning machinery and equipment would be an asset. Knowledge and/or experience with industrial effluent management would be considered an asset. COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS Annual Salary: $70,000 - $80,000 Benefits: Extended health, dental, paramedical, disability and prescription drug coverage (100% employer paid). Vacation: 3 weeks per year The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to earn equity in the company. WORK LOCATION This position will operate out of 7 Leagues' tannery which is located at 2665 East Mall, Vancouver BC, on the campus of the University of British Columbia.
