Primary Purpose of Position

To keep all shot rods, sleeves, and throat plates in good working order to ensure timely production and quality parts to our customer. Maintain appropriate plunger tip inventory for all diecast machines at High and Wright St.

Educational and Certification Background

  • Certificate of Qualification, Certificate of Apprenticeship (Toolmaker) Red Seal
  • 5+ years’ experience in a diecast, automotive, or manufacturing environment performing like tasks
  • Have a basic understanding of machine tools and equipment.
  • Can recognize the Tool & Die Component and Assembly and part/producer prints.
  • Understanding of the working of horizontal, vertical universal and milling machines, including set-up and operation, speeds and feeds, coolants, work piece holding, mounting, milling operations, keyways, angles, slots, etc.
  • Must show effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be familiar with the OH&S Act and Regulations

Major Responsibilities of Position

Housekeeping: Clean toolroom area and equipment. Maintain safe working environment. Report to Toolroom leader any safety concerns.

  • Maintenance: De-soldering shot sleeves. Maintain shot sleeves, rods, and throat plates through regular preventative maintenance. Contribute to Continuous Improvement and Kaizens. Perform measuring and check all plunger tips and shot sleeves. Support special projects leader with punches and cores from the machining task list. Make revisions and changes to shot rods, sleeves, and throat plates as requested. Update tooling engineers on any pertinent data or changes done to shot end components.
  • Check newly arrived sleeves, shot rods, and throat plates. Notify tooling engineers of any broken or damaged shot end components. Prepare to send out for repair if needed.
  • Plunger tips, cores, punches, and drawings for parts. Machine plunger tips - New style to restock as they are changed and sorted; - Old style to be set-up at time of request.
  • Must take time to train apprentices, passing on the knowledge of the trade as needed. Must take the initiative to learn new machinery to ensure job knowledge does not get outdated.
  • Must contribute their opinion or forward ideas about tooling improvements. Cooperating with production, maintenance, and engineering personnel to ensure that qualified tooling is available and maintained.
