Product Designer

Longboard is on a journey to become a world-class leader in manufacturing exceptional building architectural products by focusing on three core strategies namely Radical Client Care, Relentless Executional Improvement & Revolutionary Product Development. Revolutionary Product Development is key to sustaining our existing product leadership position in the market. Achieving this strategy will mean delivering a continuous pipeline of innovative new products with sustainable performance and design advantages over the existing market offerings.

The Product Designer role will be pivotal in driving these efforts in a collaborative environment with the rest of Longboards’ leadership team, to develop new product lines, enhance and continuously improve existing product lines, and provide technical support where required. The Product Designer will further be responsible for monitoring, coordinating, and giving input into the various stages of the product development cycle such as Idea Generation, Screening, Research, Design, Testing, and Product Launches.

What You Will Do:

· Engage in the entire process of product development and product design from inception of new ideas, iterating product variations, and testing through to the product launch cycle.

· Keep up to date, research, and develop a good understanding of the Building, Design, Construction, and Architectural community, the challenges they face, and the products they need.

· Develop a good understanding of the key principles in building and building envelope design, industry codes, standards, and specifications.

· Develop conceptual ideas through draft sketches on paper, as well as detailed models utilizing CAD software packages as necessary.

· Develop detailed 3D and 2D CAD models of products and product assemblies both alone, as well as within the built environment.

· Research materials and techniques used for producing new and conceptual products.

· Produce prototype components through additive manufacturing, in-house as well as vendor fabrication, and test functionality and feasibility of design in a hands-on environment.

· Guide and inform on the process of selecting the best manufacturing solutions of product components throughout the design process.

· Interact with architects and installers to understand their needs and recommendations on existing product improvements, as well as new products for their respective market and customer base.

· Optimize product manufacturing efficiency through good product design principles (DFM and DFA).

· Coordinate with and develop extrusion die drawings in collaboration with the production department using established industry standards.

· Perform software simulations (Solidworks Simulation) and develop reports such as structural and thermal finite element analysis (FEA) as part of the product design and design verification process.

· Co-ordinate and give input into 3rd party product testing such as Wind Load, Impact, Seismic, Thermal Conductivity and Acoustics

· Give input into the development of technical documents covering product specifications, manufacturing guidelines, and installation instructions.

· Gather feedback from the account managers, product managers, and end users to determine functionality, as well as opportunities for product improvement.
