Rate of Pay: $34.98 - $44.57 per hour

The Exercise Specialist, as a member of an interprofessional team, works to enhance the quality of life of individuals by assisting them in maintaining, preventing and/or rehabilitating many of the physical and psychological problems that can be attributed to illness, disease, chronic disease, sport and work related injuries, aging, and long periods of inactivity.

With the interprofessional team, the Exercise Specialist is responsible for assessing a client's movement, skills, performance and physical functional abilities in order to establish an impression of their abilities. The Exercise Specialist works to establish maintenance, preventative and rehabilitative exercise programs that are directed at enhancing physical performance, movement, motor skills and psychological well-being, with the goal of enabling clients to increase their independence, improve their physical functioning, quality of life and participation in activities of daily living. The Exercise Specialist also acts as a consultant to other disciplines and outside agencies.

Qualifications : Education/Experience :

  • Baccalaureate university degree or equivalent from an accredited Kinesiology/Human Movement Studies/Physical Education program
  • Registration with The College of Kinesiologists of Ontario is strongly encouraged
  • Membership in Canadian Kinesiology Alliance (CKA) and Ontario Kinesiology Association (OKA) is strongly encouraged
  • Training and/or knowledge of chronic disease self-management processes and techniques
  • Knowledge and experience with the decision guide model of care, motivational interviewing and strengths-based approaches to care, psychosocial rehabilitation and the principles of self-management
  • Knowledge and experience working with an adult population with serious and persistent health concerns, and the development, execution and evaluation of treatment plans utilizing SMART goals

Skills/Abilities :

  • Demonstrated understanding of the emotional, sociological, behavioural and psychological factors associated with human movement, exercise and physical activity
  • Strong assessment, intervention and treatment skills
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
