About Our Opportunity : Under the general supervision of a Red Seal Electrician, the Electrical Apprentice will learn technical knowledge and skills in the design, construction, and maintenance of electronic/electrical/mechanical systems used in traffic signal, highway lighting, and other specialized control systems throughout the province. The Electrical Apprentice ensures the quality of components and processes used and is a key player in initiating innovative technologies to further enhance the quality and serviceability of these systems that serve our highway network.

Primary Accountabilities : You play a vital role in ensuring quality components and processes are used and are a key player in initiating innovative technologies to enhance the quality and serviceability of the systems that service our provincial road network. You will gain knowledge in engineering technologies to:

  • Conduct the design, prototyping and completion of specialized traffic control systems;
  • Conduct inspection, calibration, preventative and emergency system maintenance;
  • Perform bench testing, troubleshooting and repairing of traffic signal and highway lighting equipment;
  • Develop and enhance the traffic signal control program; and
  • Utilize computer software for the development of programmable logic controller (PLC) programs

Daily, you will work with a variety of equipment including traffic controllers, traffic radar, cameras, inductive loops, solar technology and microwave vehicle sensors.

Qualifications and Experience : High School, and completion of an Electronics or Electrical Engineering Technology program or an Electrical Construction and Industrial program.

Travel throughout your assigned area is required, as such, you must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable motor vehicle.

You must also demonstrate:

  • comprehensive knowledge of electronic control system construction and maintenance;
  • knowledge of electrical specification development and interpretation;
  • an ability to maintain an electronic laboratory/shop, as well as its supplies and test equipment; and
  • familiarity with computers and Microsoft Office Suite.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions : You will travel regularly throughout the province and travel is often in excess of your scheduled hours and under extreme weather conditions.

Additional Information : This opportunity is for a one (1) year term.

This position is based in the Traffic Control Office located in Miller Lake but requires fieldwork throughout the province.

This position requires you to have adequate vision and colour perception to operate safely. In addition, this position involves exposure to extreme climatic conditions, high traffic volumes and aerial.

Pay Grade : TRA 14

Salary Range : $19.10 - $30.25 Hourly
