Job description

The Aquatic Supervisor Student will ensure that programs are implemented, staff are scheduled and running according to the CK Recreation policies and aquatic procedures; assist in the delivery of our policies and procedures within the recreation department while serving our user base with a positive customer service approach.

Essential responsibilities

Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies

Lead a team of students in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment

Delivery of weekly staff training and ongoing staff evaluation

Manage and maintain a team environment with staff, providing education and leadership

Attend all aquatic training sessions/meetings

Maintain qualifications and seek additional training opportunities

Guard swims with an emphasis on incident prevention

Provide instruction of Lifesaving Society Swim for Life program, Aqua Fitness; include safety education, skills development, endurance and enjoyment in all elements of instruction

Ensure all lifesaving equipment is maintained, available and in proper working order to implement trained rescue procedures

Perform high level of first aid/rescue techniques following all set emergency procedures

Follow the policies and procedures in the CKRec Aquatic Manual

Maintain a positive image with the public

Assist with handling concerns from patrons and parents

Assist in facilitating the pre-season training for all aquatic staff

Participate and oversee the delivery and operation of programs and services

Take the lead on activities and programs, modeling energy and enthusiasm

Enforce pool rules consistently, tactfully and promptly

Supervise and implement aquatic programs, modeling energy and enthusiasm

Open, close and clean aquatic facility as scheduled

Maintain an accurate daily pool log and incident reports, deposits, program participation, budget and evaluation records

Assist in the completion of the final report and budget recommendations

Work both indoors and outdoors, with afternoon, evening, and weekend hours

Essential qualifications

Because of the responsibilities of this position, preference will be given to those students in their final year of high school or enrolled in post-secondary education, and possess one to two years of experience at a pool setting and who have shown initiative in taking a lead role at the pool

Previous experience writing/giving staff/peer performance/job evaluations an asset

Certifications/memberships/licenses

LSSC Swim Instructor certification

Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’ certification that meets WSIB regulations

LSSC National Lifeguard - Pool or Red Cross Pool Lifeguard certification

High Five : Principles of Healthy Child Development certification

LSSC Lifesaving Instructor an asset

CALA /Water Art Certification an asset

LSSC Examiner Status an asset

COVID-19 Vaccination

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent no longer requires a COVID-19 vaccination as a condition of employment. Although it is not mandatory to be vaccinated, it is highly encouraged.

Driver’s license/vehicle requirements

Because this position would be required to travel, a valid Province of Ontario driver's licence with a reliable motor vehicle is preferred.

Essential physical and/or safety requirements

Physical NLS standards or Red Cross Lifeguarding standards to be kept up through-out employment

Maintenance (wearing proper footwear and PPE)

Completion of Health & Safety Training for Supervisors

Protecting self from the sun (sunscreen, hat and hydrating with water)

Non - slip footwear (no crocs, spongy flip flops etc.) Easy to slip off or swim with

Bending : frequent stopping, crouching (up to 22.73 kgs or 50 lbs - toys up to 13.64 kgs or 30 lbs - stairs or dock removals up to 22.73 or 50 lbs) (cleaning up equipment, getting in and out of the pool, bending, squatting or kneeling to speak to patrons lower than guard)

Walking : frequent walking on level surface, balancing (scanning during a guard rotation, teaching on the deck)

Sitting : frequent sitting in a chair (possibly over 30 minutes at a time) (guarding from lifeguard chair)
