The Health & Safety, Environmental Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation, administration and maintenance of the company’s hazard management and loss prevention programs. This encompasses the company’s safety, occupational health, environmental protection, fire prevention, security and regulatory compliance programs. This position is accountable to establish strategic direction, training, and focus on safety, food safety and environmental protection to ensure that Truly Green Farms and Cedarline Greenhouses grows and maintains a leadership position in the industry.

Health & Safety

  • Provide leadership by promoting a positive safety culture through, courteous service, creative solutions and ongoing communication with managers and supervisors.
  • Develop a culture to ensure employees are comfortable sharing safety related topics.
  • Development and writing of safety policy and procedures.
  • Development of administrative processes for reporting and follow through / follow up of safety related issues.
  • Ongoing review, monitoring and evaluation of safety programs and initiate improvement strategies.
  • Develop an understanding of the day-to-day operational and logístical activities of all branches
  • Provide budgetary recommendations regarding safety initiatives.
  • Coach managers, supervisors and safety committee members towards excellence in safety programs.
  • Support Joint Health and Safety Committees by acting as a technical resource for workplace specific health and safety issues.
  • Lead each facilities Health & Safety committee
  • Identify safety training needs. Coordinate and track training progress. Provide and/or coordinate safety training as requested.
  • Conduct random and scheduled work site inspections to ensure employees and contractors follow Canada Labour Code regulations and to identify potential hazards. Report inspection results to site manager, supervisors and Operations Manager.
  • Liaison with government agencies and industry associations.
  • Lead serious incident investigations. Interview managers, supervisors, outside contractors and employees involved in the accident. Document accident investigation and report findings and preventative measures.
  • Compile data regarding company performance in areas of training, housekeeping, maintenance, first aids, medical claims, close calls incidents and accidents. Provide quarterly hazard assessment reports for senior management, identifying trends and recommending initiatives to reduce accidents.
  • Ensure contractors supply WSIB clearance certificates and safety training documents.
  • To lead the CanadaGap food safety program

Environmental

  • Audit and report environmental risks
  • Monitor worksites to ensure compliance with environmental regulations
  • Maintain information for the Hazardous Waste Information Network and reporting of hazardous wastes generated.
  • Participate in worksite meeting with MOE officers

Requirements :

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety Management with experience or knowledge in WHMIS and federal labour code
  • Related professional education from a recognized college or university
  • Supervisory experience; demonstrated ability to effectively lead a team of diverse employees
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with determination and drive to succeed
  • Solid problem solving, decision-making, time management and organizational skills; adaptable to changing priorities
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to achieve conflict resolution with both internal and external customers

Training

  • Participate in industry related training sessions when applicable

Working Conditions

  • Ability to climb and carry out investigative activities at heights of 120 feet.
  • Ability to travel to work site locations
  • Ability to work in all types of weather outdoors when needed
  • Ability to work outside of regular work hours when needed
  • Ability to attend workshops\tradeshows that may require the occasional overnight stay
