Job Title - Assistant Cook ( TWO positions available)

Duration : June to August 30 (potential opportunity to start in May or June)

Wage Range : Summer $3500-$4500 (based on 10 wks) or Spring/Summer $5600-$7200 (based on 16 wks)

  • The mission of Hidden Acres Mennonite Camp and Retreat Centre is to provide a welcoming, peaceful gathering place where diverse groups of people experience life-giving connections with God, one another, and nature. _

The Assistant Cooks will work with our Head Cook to prepare and serve well balanced, nutritious meals for up to 140 people as well as necessary clean up. The Head Cook will coordinate the ordering of food and planning of meals, training the Assistant Cooks to take on more responsibility as the season progresses. At times the Assistant Cooks will be responsible to carry out the plan of the Head Cook in their absence, and will be responsible for managing the kitchen during these times.

Requirements for all Staff

  • While the program is running, living on site is an expectation and room and board are provided.

  • Has a genuine love for, and interest in, working with children, including those who have emotional, physical, behavioural, or developmental special needs, in an inclusive summer camp program.
  • Has knowledge of the Christian faith and is willing to work supportively in a faith-based setting.
  • Is able to find a healthy balance between following directions and taking initiative to see what needs to be done and do it.
  • Is able to find a healthy balance between working hard to accomplish what needs to be done, achieving personal goals, motivating others to have fun while having fun yourself, and contributing to meeting the mission of Hidden Acres.
  • Demonstrates flexibility, an ability to change tasks or directions with ease, and a willingness to assist cooperatively in a variety of tasks and programs as time allows.
  • Displays patience, a commitment to working well with others, and the ability to solve sometimes complex problems. This is all done while maintaining a positive attitude towards others and assigned tasks.
  • Models excellent leadership behaviours and participates in all aspects of camp life.
  • First Aid, CPR and/or lifeguarding qualifications (NL certification or higher) are an asset, but not required.
  • Is able to participate in our two Staff Orientation events: May 3-4 and June 23-28

Requirements for the Assistant Cook

  • Able to assist in providing nutritional meals and snacks for up to 140 people.
  • Previous experience cooking for large groups is a significant asset, but not required. Previous camp experience is also helpful.
  • Certification from a food-safety course and/or knowledge of safe food handling practices, workplace safety, etc. is required, or has a willingness to obtain certification.
  • Is able to creatively and enthusiastically organize and effectively lead cabin groups in dishwashing, cookie baking, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Prior to the beginning of camp, assist the Head Cook with cleaning and organizing food services storage and work areas as needed.
  • Assist the Head Cook with maintaining satisfactory Public Health standards in all aspects of food services including the kitchen and its equipment, dining room and food storage areas.
  • Assist the Head Cook with implementing a nutritional and varied weekly menu.
  • Assist the Head Cook with the preparation and serving of all camp meals and snacks.
  • Take responsibility for managing the kitchen when the Head Cook is not on site.
  • The Assistant Cook is responsible to the Program Director and the Head Cook.

Job Type : Seasonal Contract length: 4 months

Salary : $350.00-$450.00 per week
