Purpose of the role: The Environmental Services Aide performs a significant role by maintaining a clean, safe, functional and pleasant environment for clients, guests and staff. As front-line members of the Care Team, their involvement can enhance the daily living of our residents through integration of social aspects into their assignment. The Housekeeping Aide will ensure that all cleaning tasks are carried out conscientiously and in accordance with the quality standards as defined by the Provincial Infectious Disease Advisory Committee and the safety standards outlined by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & SUCCESS CRITERIA**

Reporting to the Clinical Manager of Stedman Community Hospice and working as a member of the care team, this role is responsible for:

  • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces according to priority cleaning schedule
  • Maintaining family rooms, resident rooms, staff rooms, kitchens and administration offices
  • Cleaning washrooms, tub and shower rooms
  • Following procedures for segregating, handling, collection, packaging and disposal of all Hospice waste materials
  • Cleaning responsibilities are limited primarily to indoors, however, cleaners are expected to assist with outdoor seasonal tasks, garbage removal and grounds keeping duties as required.
  • Maintaining a neat and tidy supply cart and utility room
  • Ensuring proper cleaning of medical equipment after use
  • Managing floor refinishing using buffing machines
  • Performing terminal cleaning procedures in keeping with Infection Prevention and Control standards
  • Ensuring all cleaning products are appropriately labelled as per WHMIS requirements
  • Monitoring levels of cleaning solutions and replenishing as needed
  • Ensuring proper storage of all cleaning supplies
  • Monitoring supply inventory and places weekly orders for replenishment
  • Documenting and tracking maintenance requisitions and provides updates to Clinical Manager
  • Following established procedures for equipment operation and storage
  • Providing quality improvement feedback and participating in quality assurance
  • Participating in ongoing educational opportunities
  • Acting as a champion of Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety standards and practices
  • Contributing to a transparent culture of client and staff safety by adhering to and abiding by patient and staff safety policies and procedures set by Stedman Community Hospice and St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre Brantford as applicable
  • Identifies unsafe conditions or practices and takes appropriate action to address them including reporting or removing hazard
  • Furniture movement less than 25 lbs
  • Ad hoc duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma
  • WHMIS certification
  • Accountable for cleaning of assigned areas maintaining quality assurance standard in these areas.
  • Motivated self-started and takes initiative
  • Ability to perform and comprehend oral and written communication
  • Demonstrates strong customer service and people skills
  • Adapts to a flexible schedule through good organization skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision as well as part of a staff team
  • Understands patient’s and families’ right to privacy and always maintains confidentiality
  • Current police records check with vulnerable sector search (issued within the past 6 months)
  • Lift weights less than 25 lbs.
