Guardian Watchman

Responsibilities :

  • General_
  • Monitor commercial and recreational activities on the North and Central Coast.
  • Gather data on the ecological health and wellbeing of the allocated ancestral traditional territories.
  • Compile and share obtained data in order to inform decision-making in the traditional ancestral territories.
  • Responsible for carrying out compliance and enforcement as per policy.
  • Have a strong presence throughout the assigned territories so that resource users regularly interact with the team.
  • Assist (as requested) to secure funding to support ongoing, year-round Guardian/Watchmen programs in the communities.
  • Play an active role in community outreach and education regarding the protection of Metlakatla cultural and natural resources.
  • Work with the federal and provincial government (through management agreements that respect the title and rights of First Nations) to ensure coordinated and robust monitoring throughout our territories.
  • Perform other duties within the scope of the position, as required.

Competencies and Qualifications :

  • Minimum of three (3) years experience with environmental monitoring.
  • Demonstrated technical competency in a relevant environmental discipline.
  • As a condition of employment, this position involves particular physical capabilities: being required to lift and carry equipment and supplies up to 20 kg; ability/interest to work extensively in the field in a range of weather conditions, frequently in remote locations.
  • Research and analytical skills (data collection, compilation and analysis).
  • Physically fit and capable of doing fieldwork in a safety-conscious manner.
  • Working knowledge of BC environmental laws.
  • Self-motivated with strong initiative, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • An interest in the environment and a willingness to work outdoors.
  • Strong organization skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and tight timelines.
  • Ability to work individually with little supervision and as part of a dynamic team.
  • Proficient use of various office-based software including Microsoft Office Suite.
