POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Occupational Health & Safety, the H&SBP is a safety champion for the Prince Rupert Port Authority (PRPA). Partnering with the Manager, Occupational Health & Safety, the H&SBP will ensure PRPA develops a world-class safety program by:

  • compliance with legal safety requirements.
  • appropriate PRPA collaboration on safety initiatives.
  • or developing best safety practices.
  • innovating, monitoring, and improving the program.

By ensuring best safety practices and preparedness, the H&SBP will support PRPA in meeting its strategic business objectives.

MAJOR POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Build positive relationships across PRPA, the Safety Committees and other stakeholders. At all times, you are modelling PRPA’s values.
  • Supports the development and implementation of occupational health and safety (OHS) and emergency preparedness (EP) programs.
  • Conducting or supporting employee incident investigations and ensuring corrective actions are completed.
  • Providing PRPA Operations with real-time safety advice.
  • Tracking OHS statistics.
  • Supports the Workplace Safety Committees.
  • Responds to incidents and emergency events.
  • Coordinating, tracking and participating in workplace safety inspections.
  • Assists in developing and implementing OHS and EP drills and exercises.
  • Developing and facilitating OHS and EP training or coordinating delivery by external resources.
  • Maintains the documentation and inventory of the Emergency Operations Centre and tracks training needs.
  • Maintains the documentation and inventory of the First Aid Program and tracks training needs.
  • Tracking and reporting on safety metrics, such as training completion, incidents, policy/procedure review and inspections.
  • Liaising with OHS regulatory authorities and other external stakeholders.
  • Carrying out duties as may be required by the OHS Manager.
  • Developing, implementing, and reviewing environmental health management plans and occupational health and safety plans.
  • Identifying hazards, and assessing and controlling risks in the workplace.
  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring programs minimizing workplace pollution involving chemical and physical hazards.
  • Training employees in personal protective equipment and safe working procedures.
  • Carrying out duties as may be required by the OHS Manager.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Formal Education

Completion of an OHS Certificate/Diploma Program at an accredited College or University or construction safety officer certification is considered an asset.

Related Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in OHS, customer service-related fields, project management, analytic reporting and/or developing programs.
  • A Canadian Registered Safety Professional designation or the intent to pursue the designation is considered an asset.

Other Requirements

  • Work efficiently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational, planning, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of OH&S laws and regulations, codes, and industry best practices; OHS Regulation and Workers Compensation Act.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Good judgment and tact in dealing with sensitive issues and confidential information.
  • Great relationship-building skills. Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and to effectively handle changing priorities.

  • Provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 with a vaccine approved by Health Canada.
  • Able to obtain security clearance under Transport Canada’s Security Clearance Program.
  • Possesses a valid Class 5, or equivalent, Driver’s Licence and be willing to provide a driver’s extract.

The starting base salary range for this role is $86,755 – $101,213
