Chatham-Kent Public Library (CKPL) has an opening for a temporary part-time Courier with the Chatham-Kent Public Library division. This is a temporary part-time position of 7 hours per week, for a period up to January 2024.

Job description

The Courier position delivers library materials and inter-office mail to Municipal buildings throughout Chatham-Kent. The courier is responsible for sorting, transporting and delivering documents, library materials and supplies to and from such sites as the Civic Centre, eleven locations of Chatham-Kent Public Library, Municipal Service Centres, and other municipally owned facilities.

Essential responsibilities

  • Demonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competencies
  • Transport and deliver library materials and municipal documents, frequently time-sensitive and confidential, to and from Municipal sites including eleven locations of Chatham-Kent Public Library, the Civic Centre, Municipal Centres, and other municipally owned facilities
  • Adhere to proper health and safety precautions in the regular lifting of tubs of library materials, equipment and other heavy objects
  • Sort items before each day's delivery and as mail and materials are picked up en route, ensuring that items are delivered on time and to the correct destination
  • Deliver supplies such as cleaning and paper products, printer ink
  • Monitor the condition of the courier van, including daily pre
  • and post-trip vehicle inspection, and schedule service as needed
  • Actively participate in Municipal and Library training
  • Assist with assembling and shipping rotations to branches and deposit libraries
  • Assist with patron concerns, routing unresolved issues to Manager
  • Assist with marketing and promotion of resources and services

Essential qualifications

  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent education (e.g. GED certificate)
  • Previous driving or trucking experience required
  • Experience adhering to health and safety precautions in a business environment
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills required
  • Computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software programs)
  • Must be bondable

Other qualifications

  • Previous delivery experience loading and unloading materials an asset
  • Previous library experience, preferably in a public library, an asset
  • Previous experience in a customer service setting an asset

Work environment/hours of work

  • This position works indoors and outdoors
  • This position works weekday hours, with afternoon, evening and weekend hours

  • Physical stamina, flexibility, good physical health and the ability to lift 15.9 to 18.1 kgs or 35 to 40 lbs are a necessity, as is the ability to stand for extended periods of time, kneel and reach
  • Bending: frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, squatting (4.05 to 13.64 kgs or 10 to 30 lbs) (retrieving items, delivering material, moving containers)
  • Walking: frequent walking on level surface (movement around library)
  • Sitting: constant sitting in vehicle seat (driving)
  • Reaching: frequent reaching above shoulder, below shoulder, forward; constant handling (up to 18.1 kgs or 40 lbs) (delivering container/bins/boxes/equipment/materials)
  • Lifting: frequent lifting floor to waist, waist to shoulder, carrying, pushing below shoulder, pulling at or above shoulder, pulling below shoulder; constant transferring (up to 18.1 kgs or 40 lbs) (delivering containers/bins/boxes/ equipment/materials; pushing/pulling dolly/delivery carts)
  • Hands: frequent gripping (up to 4.05 kgs or 10 lbs) (retrieving mail, materials, supplies)
  • Foot action: frequent one foot action (driving)
