Casual Support Worker

Under the guidance of the Manager, this role will advocate for and provide care for the people we support. You will promote an inclusive lifestyle, support people in achieving their personal goals and foster independence to the best of one’s abilities.

Qualifications :

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Grade 12 or GED with a minimum 4000 hours experience at Manager’s discretion
  • Valid driver’s license and required insurance
  • Able to obtain required training; including but not limited to; CPR, First Aid, NVCI, WHMIS, Violence in the Workplace, fire extinguisher, Bullying in the Workplace, Hand Hygiene, Donning and Doffing and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Physically able to fulfill requirements of the job

Responsibilities and Duties :

  • Follow programs as outlined in the Individual Support Plan (ISP) and assistpeople to achieve their goals.
  • Provide input into the person centred planning process for people supported
  • Support and encourage each person to participate in meaningful ways in their community, support daily living skills to promote independence, in making decisions taking reasonable risks and assume responsibilities.
  • Support and provide personal care and hygiene, meal preparation, clean up laundry, general household duties
  • Identify organizational barriers to people’s goals and promote alternative strategies and/or approaches
  • Advocates on behalf of people supported, for the agency and for the sector
  • Maintain complete, up-to-date and confidential records and documentation for each person
  • Maintain confidentiality between programs in relation to staff issues and performance
  • Provide ongoing, respectful, positive communication, written and verbal to all those involved with people we support, including Manager, Supervisors, staff and homes/programs
  • Encourage people to assume as much responsibility for their health care needs as possible through instruction and education
  • Ensure that Health and Safety Policies, guidelines, incident/accident reports and occurrences, NVCI or other crisis protocols are understood, followed and reported
  • When required, must be able to demonstrate safe lifting techniques for both mechanical and manual lifts and according to EDCL policy.
  • Ensure that all medications are administered and documented accurately and are kept in the designated, properly locked cabinet
  • May be required to accommodate a person’s changing physical or environmental needs, ex. aging, dementia, mobility or behavioural
  • Adapting to uncontrollable circumstances, for example, power outages, severe weather
  • Ensure that the home/work environment is a clean, safe and enjoyable environment and meets or exceeds the standards of the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services
  • Ensure that the home or support environment supports people’s emotional and physical well being
  • Provide assistance with other daily living/work duties as required
  • Other duties as required.
