Senior Underwriting Specialist

We are in search of a Senior Underwriting Specialist to join our team! In this role, you will oversee the underwriting and profitable expansion of our construction business within the Canadian market, particularly focusing on the Quebec Region. Additionally, you will play a crucial part in coaching, mentoring, and training team members to foster their professional growth. Building and nurturing relationships with select broker partners and clients will be integral, as will providing valuable input into regional strategies and operational enhancements.

Responsibilities:

  • Underwrite and negotiate policy terms and conditions for new first-party Construction business, offering mentorship to fellow underwriters as necessary.
  • Cultivate and sustain broker/client relationships to drive profitable growth of Construction products through independent sales calls, client meetings, and representation at industry events.
  • Continuously enhance expertise in first-party product lines and claims trends, making recommendations for improvement where applicable.
  • Collaborate with other business units to identify cross-marketing opportunities and lead by example in fostering such collaborations.
  • Establish the company as a preferred insurer among target brokers through outstanding service and superior underwriting skills.
  • Keep leadership informed of key developments in the Construction portfolio and broker/market intelligence, recommending changes as needed based on local market conditions.
  • Coordinate with the Construction Practice Leader/Management to ensure alignment with underwriting protocols and product strategies.
  • Effectively manage workload priorities.
  • Undertake additional duties and initiatives as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant insurance industry experience focused in the Quebec region.
  • Experience in underwriting construction and/or energy property insurance is essential.
  • University degree, preferably in business, engineering, or applied science, is considered an asset.
  • Proven self-starter with strong analytical skills and a track record of driving profitable growth through a solutions-oriented underwriting approach.
  • Familiarity with underwriting frameworks, authorities, and protocols.
  • Demonstrated broker relationships with global, national, and regional brokers.
  • Ability to identify, facilitate, and execute portfolio rollover opportunities, market or sector segmentation, and target accounts.
  • Comfortable with critical thinking and fostering a growth mindset while respecting diverse perspectives.
  • Skilled in providing and receiving positive and constructive feedback.
  • Effective in managing internal and external meetings with professionalism and clarity.
