Temporary Contract from October 1 to March 1, 2024

St. Michaels University School (SMUS) is seeking an experienced Choreographer to support our musical theatre team. Reporting to the Head of Theatre Arts and the Head of Music, the Choreographer will provide a key instructional role in mounting our annual spring musical. The Choreographer will work with the creative team—specifically the director, music director, and vocal director—to determine and develop movement that will help tell the story and support the vision of the piece.

Work Schedule:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays in October (3:15-5:45)
  • Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from November to mid-December
  • Mon-Thur from 2nd week of January to production dates
  • Availability during Tech Week
  • Friday, February 21 - full dress rehearsal at SMUS (12-9pm)
  • Saturday, February 22 - TBD
  • Sunday, February 23 - spacing rehearsal on the McPherson stage, followed by a run under work lights, 9am - 6pm
  • Monday, February 24 - 9am-6pm, lighting and tech rehearsals
  • Tuesday, February 25 - 5:30-11pm, Tech rehearsal
  • Wednesday, February 26 - 5:30-10:30, Dress rehearsal
  • Thursday, February 27 - 5:30-10:30, Opening Night
  • Saturday, March 1 - 5:30pm-1am, Closing Night
  • Help with strike at theatre, unloading at SMUS, Closing party

Responsibilities include :

  • Working in collaboration with the Director, Music Director, Vocal Director to organize and run rehearsals for our major, annual musical production at the McPherson Playhouse
  • Creating original choreography for our musical production
  • Setting choreography for approximately 10 large ensemble numbers (50-60 students) and working on other numbers with leads and smaller ensembles
  • Reviewing and cleaning numbers
  • Attending all run-throughs, giving detailed notes for polishing performances
  • Working closely with student dance captains
  • Post Secondary training in Performance and Dance
  • Dance certifications are an asset
  • Experience teaching and instructing dance to high school students
  • Experience choreographing large-scale, Broadway musicals
  • For this year’s musical, The Prom , working knowledge and experience teaching tap, jazz, Fosse, hip hop, musical theatre, modern
  • Excellent knowledge of RehearScore, Q-Lab, and Garageband (or other song editing software)
  • Has a high level of attention to detail as well as the capacity to be a proactive problem solver
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, negotiation and mediation skills
  • Organized with the ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines
  • Enthusiastic, energetic, engaging with the ability to work independently
  • Ability to be tactful, demonstrate excellent judgment, and work as a positive and collaborative team member with a large production team (director, music director, vocal director, set designer, costume designer, hair & makeup designer, lighting designer, sound designer)
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered

Pay Range : Hourly pay range: $50 - $80

Criminal Record Check : Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
