Unit Summary We are the largest employer in the greater Hamilton region, a world-renowned hospital for healthcare research, and focused on improving the quality of care for our patients through innovation and evidence-based practices. Our multi-site hospital has over 1,400 beds, and we offer world-leading expertise in many areas, including cardiac and stroke care, cancer care, palliative care, and pediatrics. The Department of Security Services is responsible for the overall coordination of the security program and response to security needs for staff, patients, and visitors at our multiple sites. The Security team investigates concerns, provides advice and recommendations to optimize the personal security of all hospital patrons, and often liaises with external authorities as appropriate. Position Summary The Security Professional is responsible for delivering quality protection programs and security services to patients, visitors, and staff at Hamilton Health Sciences' various sites. The Security Guard will work with all areas of the organization, along with Hamilton Police Services, to continuously improve our service levels and meet the expectations of our community and staff. To succeed in this role, you must have demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. The incumbent will regularly interact with others, using interpersonal skills to diffuse contentious situations, provide support and reassurance of personal security, and enforce laws and policies. In this role, you will be tasked with using technology to monitor, communicate appropriately, document events, and input data for necessary report generation. Emphasis will be placed on your passion for keeping others safe and your ability to organize your time effectively to ensure timely response and documentation of incidents, including complete and accurate report writing following investigations. Qualifications A post-secondary degree/diploma in Human Services, Humanities, Law and Security, or Police Foundations from a recognized institution is preferred. Alternatively, a minimum of three years of relevant security experience will also be considered Completion of a Crisis Intervention certificate is preferred. Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program and Standard First Aid is preferred. Current & Valid Security Licence in accordance with the Private Security and Investigative Services Act of Ontario. Demonstrated ability to provide support and direction for all security-related issues, including responding to emergency code situations, reports of theft or threat, physical altercations, safety plans, etc. Knowledge of applicable federal, provincial, and municipal statutes and standards. Working knowledge of commercial surveillance and access control technologies. Knowledge of computers, including Windows, Incident Reporting, Excel, Microsoft Word, and Outlook (email). Ability to run up and/or down stairs, restrain individuals, and carry out functions under stressful conditions as required. Willingness to provide a police background check. Must be able to successfully complete HHS Internal Crisis Intervention and De-escalation training. Experience: Preference for candidates with experience working in care environments such as hospitals or community service agencies and/or knowledge and experience in social services or the mental health field. Preference for candidates with experience, knowledge, and/or sensitivity to working with clients/patients from historically marginalized groups and those with mental health challenges.
