Job Summary This position involves leading the Biotechnical Support Centre (BSC) at the Department of Biochemistry & Microbiology, which supports the Faculty of Science’s teaching and research initiatives. The role entails supervising technical staff, managing financial operations, and maintaining a diverse array of scientific equipment. Responsibilities include ensuring the efficient workflow of the BSC, overseeing the acquisition and maintenance of equipment, providing technical support and training, and ensuring compliance with departmental policies. The role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and financial management skills to support the complex needs of the scientific community within the university. Job Requirements Education/Experience: Required educational background includes a degree from a technical college or similar institution with a specialization in electronics. Comprehensive knowledge in electronics, electro-mechanics, and other related fields, necessary for equipment repair and troubleshooting. Familiarity with university systems such as Accounting, Purchasing, and Facilities Management Work Requisition systems. Proficiency in various software packages, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe suites. Understanding of biological sciences, chemistry and physics, which enhances capability in managing specialized scientific equipment. Experience: At least 10 years of experience in maintaining and repairing a broad range of modern scientific instrumentation. Proven leadership and supervisory skills with a track record of effective team management. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment. Excellent communication and leadership skills to effectively manage a dynamic team. High level of independence, resourcefulness, and decision-making with minimal supervision. Strong ability to handle pressure, troubleshoot complex problems, and maintain focus amidst frequent changes. Financial insight necessary for managing budgets, making significant purchasing decisions, and overseeing financial accounts. Strong presentation skills for representing the department in various forums. Technical proficiency, including fine motor skills and mechanical aptitude, for handling sensitive and intricate equipment. Adaptability to continuously learn about new technologies while managing existing systems. Ability to work well with diverse teams and manage communications across different language proficiencies. Additional Requirements: Availability to respond to emergency situations outside of regular working hours as needed due to equipment issues or alarms.
