Vanderwell is an Alberta, family-owned company operating in northern Alberta for more than 75 years. We have modern sawmill, planer mill, and pellet mill facilities, which produce dimensional lumber, wood pellets, shavings, and chips for wholesale customers.

We’re a major employer in the local region, we have more than 175 employees working throughout the operation -- mill production, sales & shipping, woodlands, truck and mobile equipment shops, and administration. Contract and part-time employees are also employed in maintenance, transportation, and seasonal activities.

The Opportunity

We are currently looking to hire a Lumber Grader to assist in the quality departmentof our manufacturing facilities in Mitsue Industrial Park, near Slave Lake, Alberta.

Job duties include:

  • Conducts daily Quality Control checks of all Sawmill and Planer mill stations
  • Conducts package inspections to determine efficiency of Grades
  • Monitors and makes necessary adjustments to ensure wood is being correctly graded, sorted and packaged throughout the production process
  • Keeps Operations Manager informed at all times of product quality or potential issues
  • Works closely with Comact to ensure Gradex performs to the highest standard to Quality Products
  • Work closely with AFPA grading inspector to ensure his quality checks are successful
  • Keeping the HT Manual up to date with changes noted, plus monitoring dry kiln schedules

Working Conditions:

  • Exposed to noise, dust, falling debris, moving machinery, weather extremes, splinters, slipping and tripping hazards
  • Lifting heavy, awkward objects and climbing on equipment is frequently required
  • Required use of PPE appropriate for the task and working conditions

Must have:

  • A solid work ethic, be eager to learn, and be a team player
  • A Bachelor of Science in Wood Product Processing or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the lumber processing industry
  • Sound mechanical knowledge and attention to detail
  • Current AFPA grading certificate
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to Mitsue Industrial Park
