Psychiatric Emergency Service Psychiatrist

The Psychiatry Department in Victoria is looking for part-time Psychiatrists to join a dedicated team servicing our Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) for weekday, weekend and holiday coverage shifts. Planned weekday hours are 8:00 am to 12:30 pm and 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm. These hours may change depending on clinical volumes. Psychiatrists will provide patient centered care and will be responsive and flexible to team-based requests for clinical involvement.

The Psychiatrist will demonstrate evidence of learning in practice and professional development beyond initial transition to practice by embodying the Milestones laid out for a Specialist in practice by the Royal Surgeons of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in the Can Meds 2015 Milestones:

  • Expert who provides evidence-based, collaborative patient & family centred, culturally sensitive care.
  • Communicator who effectively facilitates the doctor-patient relationship and the dynamic exchanges that occur before, during, and after the medical encounter.

Physicians within the Department of Psychiatry participate in periodic performance evaluations.

Program Description

Psychiatry Emergency Services (PES) at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria is a busy, active service that is part of the main Emergency Department. Currently about 300 patients per month are seen in PES. Between 3500-3800 patients have been seen annually over the last 2 years.

Consistent with Island Health vision, PES intends to provide compassionate and respectful care to those requiring emergency psychiatric assessment and intervention. A multidisciplinary mental health team in PES works closely with the emergency room physicians, psychiatrists, community partners and inpatient units to facilitate the best care for patients.

Island Health is an organization committed to the education of all health care disciplines. Undergraduate and graduate medical, nursing and social work students participate in a supervised capacity as members of the PES team.

Island Health psychiatrists are expected to provide regular on-call 24-hour Adult Psychiatry shifts, and Back Up Call shifts for 7 days at a time.

Participation in research is strongly encouraged and facilitated by Island Health.

Administrative duties of the position include attending clinical team meetings and meetings of the physician group.

Additional Information
