HomeBridge Youth Society offers an interdisciplinary approach to youth residing in one of 6 programs across the HRM; Hawthorne House, Johnson House, Jubien House, Sullivan House, Cogswell House and the Reigh Allen Centre. There is also an onsite accreditted school program called Bridges for Learning. Each program offers youth between the ages of 12 and 18 an opportunity to experience therapeutic interventions, life-skills, and support through the use of daily life events with a focus on evidence based approaches to stabilization and education.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide ongoing leadership to and sharing of knowledge and/or training, and support to HomeBridge youth care workers and other staff as required; building and maintaining a cohesive and supportive team
  • Respond to the needs of the youth care team with continual evaluation and assessment of the program
  • Recruit and interview (in conjunction with the HomeBridge Human Resource Manager) youth care staff; ensure proper completion of the employee file
  • Ensure that staffing levels meet and/or exceed minimum requirements under the Provincial Policies as the occupancy rate requires; responsible for scheduling, staff rotations and assigning tasks
  • Provide direction to and supervision of Youth Care Workers, take disciplinary action and conduct performance appraisals as required
  • Ensure all staff are fully aware and knowledgeable of the policies and procedures of the HomeBridge and the Provincial Policies; obtain written confirmation of same as required under the Policies of HomeBridge
  • Coordinate, conduct and prepare the agenda for team meetings as required
  • Build ongoing and supportive relationships with all stakeholders: youth, professionals associated with HomeBridge, families, placing agencies, community, etc.
  • Respond to all placement related requests from the Department of Community Services and arrange those admissions in consulation with the Director of Youth Care Services
  • Support and provide feedback to all disciplines within HomeBridge (youth care team, Program Director, School Personnel, Recreation Therapist, Social Work, Occupatonal Therapist, etc.)
  • Financial management and record keeping of the Petty Cash (received and expended) and ensure: availability for daily programming and resident needs; bi-weekly reconciliation; monthly billings
  • Ensure compliance with the recording requirements for admissions, logs, and reports and they are properly stored and retained for the required time periods
  • Provide after hours on-call support as scheduled
  • Maintain all youth care staff personnel files and records and update as required
  • Ensure the Director of Youth Care Services and the Executive Director are advised, and updated, of any significant events
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Director of Youth Care Services, the Director of Operations or the Executive Director

Experience and Education :

  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or a related field or the equivelant of expereince,training and education
  • Minimum of three (3) years direct Youth Care experience
  • Minimum of two (2) years adolescent care experience
  • Meet or exceed the minimum requirements of the Province of Nova Scotia, Department of Community Services, Provincial Policies for Child-Caring Facilities; Children and Family Services Act and Regulations
  • Previous Management expereince is considered an asset

The work environment demands strong concentration and the ability to focus while maintaining a sensitivity and appreciation of the delicate balance required with the clientele. Work hours are based upon client needs. Must be able to work independently and under stressful conditions. Working environment often requires sensitivity to cultural, societal differences and appropriate protocols. Working conditions include physical, emotional and mental demands.
