  • End Date: Position Summary : Reporting to the Director, Communications, the Communications Specialist oversees the content on the home page and MyNews page of both the Employee and Student Intranets (MySeneca’s). Ensures that cross-institutional communications are posted to both platforms in a timely manner. Creates original content for articles, edits the work of others and provides support and direction to academic and service areas on use of the platform. Advises on communications procedures and practices, develops communication plans and ensures that all communications adhere to CP style and Seneca’s writing style guide as well as Seneca’s Brand guidelines.

Responsibilities :

  • Researching possible articles that support Seneca’s strategic objectives for the intranets and the website.
  • Ensuring Seneca’s strategic goals, objectives or Executive priorities are explained, represented and demonstrated.
  • Ensuring there are no objectionable cultural, gender other issues associated with the material in order to protect Seneca’s image and project proper messaging.

Content Creation :

  • Writing/editing articles detailing student and employee success for both the student and employee intranet.
  • Provides basic training and support for all areas of Seneca that use the intranet including showing where employees can access Seneca brand guidelines and writing style guide.
  • Ensuring Seneca’s strategic goals, objectives or Executive priorities are explained, represented and demonstrated.
  • Ensuring there are no objectionable cultural, gender other issues associated with the material in order to protect Seneca’s image and project proper messaging.

Management and posting of information (digital displays/exterior signage)

  • Assists Researching, writing and editing materials for on-campus digital displays.
  • Using Seneca licensed software to post and troubleshoot problems, escalate to ITS if necessary.
  • Ensuring there are no objectionable cultural, gender other issues associated with the material in order to protect Seneca’s image and project proper messaging.

Supports and responds to internal and external inquiries :

  • Researching, developing, organizing, writing and editing information in response to requests from internal and external communities.
  • Ensuring Seneca’s strategic goals, objectives or Executive priorities are explained, represented and demonstrated.
  • Researching, writing and editing materials for Seneca Executive.
  • Ensuring there are no objectionable cultural, gender other issues associated with the material in order to protect Seneca’s image and project proper messaging.

Other Duties as assigned.

Qualifications : Education :

  • Minimum completed three (3) year Diploma/Degree in Corporate Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Media and Communications or related. If education is in a relevant field, please state how it is relevant.

Experience :

  • Minimum five (5) years’ proven experience in a Corporate Communications or media environment is required.

Skills :

  • Understanding of journalistic practices and styles.
  • Ability to write in didactic inverse pyramid (Canadian Press) style.
  • Proficiency with the PC/Mac operating systems.
  • Understanding of basic photographic principles and proficiency with digital photography - including digital photographic manipulation software (Adobe Photoshop).
  • Experience with html and content management systems.
