Here, your knowledge, skills, and excellent service will help ensure that the buildings that make up Canada’s infrastructure fulfill the needs they were set out to meet.Modern Niagara is one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies and is a recipient of SMACNA‘s Safety Excellence Award Program (SSEAP) – Canada and the Canadian Occupational Safety (COS) Magazine’s Gold Winner for Canada’s Safest Employers Award in the Building and Construction category and Excellence Winner for Canada’s Best Health + Safety Culture Award as well as Canada’s Best Health + Safety Leader Award.We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Senior Mechanical Estimator to join our Estimating team in our Ottawa, ON and be an integral part of delivering continued success within this department. In addition to your day-to-day Estimating responsibilities which include: preparing accurate tender prices from the available information such as drawings and specifications, as Senior Mechanical Estimator you will also be responsible for providing guidance to junior employees and insights to the Modern Niagara Senior Leadership Team across trends within the market.Duties and Responsibilities Performing quantity takeoffs including entry into estimating softwarePreparation, final review, and submission of Bid Documents to ensure all bid requirements are metAssemble all elements of an estimate including labour, material, equipment, and subcontractor pricingThe ability to prepare takeoffs using drawings and documents that may be less than 100% completeUnderstand the labour variances between project types and apply appropriate correction factorsProvide detailed labor breakdowns for each area to assist with budget creation and management of the projectPrepares budgets for prospective projectsAttend and participate in site visits, pre-bid meetings, and post-bid meetings as requiredParticipate in estimating turnover meetings with the project team to assist with the planning and budget processEstablish strong relationships with suppliers and sub-trades to ensure sound and competitive pricing is receivedReviewing project to develop a win strategyReviewing final cost report with the project team and develop for historical informationInterpret client and design information and have sufficient industry and design knowledge to interpret and include for a complete system.Ability to critically review request for proposals, preliminary designs, estimates, proposals, and both external and internal information to enable best decisions to be made in consultation with management.Ability to decide as part of a team which projects have potential for MNV to pursue and execute and which to decline, based on backlog, complexity, schedule, client, resources, and target market.Timing of all duties and responsibilities as set up by the Estimating Policy and/or reviewed during estimating meetings  Job Requirements 10+ years of relevant Mechanical Estimating experience with strong exposure across organizing and preparing cost estimates and proposals for Mechanical, Plumbing or Sheet Metal construction projects within a field or office settingExperienced with, and a willingness to train and mentor team members.Proven project (procedures and budgeting) and resource management with ability to demonstrate leadership skills through past work experienceAbility to interpret site and building plans and specifications.Experience with project or construction management software (eg; Procore)Post-secondary degree or diploma with focus in mechanical or construction technology engineering is desirableProven skills in applying the practices and procedures used in the direct preparation of mechanical cost estimates for complex construction working in both the subcontractor and prime contractor capacityExperience in commercial and institutional projectsProven ability to create and maintain effective relationships with clients, vendors, subcontracts, architects, designers, field superintendents and staff We thank all applicants for their interest, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.At Modern Niagara, we recognize the value of fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive organization and are committed to eliminating barriers faced by members of equity-seeking groups (women, Indigenous, Black, racialized, 2SLGBTQIA+, people with disabilities, and new immigrants) in the construction industry.
