Provides comprehensive discipline leadership and supervises the Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfittingpart of the ship’s design. Communicates project team’s issues and critical initiatives to the Manager or the assigned project leader regularly. Allocates design/drafting work to team members and ensures that they work within their competencies and with appropriate supervision. Supports the Manager by providing mentorship and guidance to other less experienced designers or subcontractors in the Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting engineering/design area. Provides design expertise in assigned areas of Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting design by preparing and reviewing design and functional packages to ensure functional design requirements are met. Provides subject area expertise to lead design: produce integrated 3D models, based on engineering documentation, class society rules and regulations, flag rules, company and international standards, develop design solutions and prepare detail design production documentation (MI packages) within project schedule and budget. Develops and reviews design drawings for icebreaking, naval replenishment and different support or multi-purpose vessels to achieve customer approval and Classification Society, flag regulatory compliance. Ensures appropriate design methods are used and that appropriate design checks are undertaken. Develops material specifications and bills of material in accordance with the company's material strategies and customer requirements. Actively supports the company design standards development and improvement process. Identifies improvements in subject area processes, tools and training that can offer increased efficiency, responsiveness, and product quality. Provides technical support to production and performs trade studies both formal and informal to determine the most cost-effective solutions to design problems and meet material budgets for systems assigned. Finds opportunities to reduce material and labor costs below budget. What you must have: Technical Diploma or Associate’s degree in either Mechanical Systems, Naval Architecture or Marine. 10+ years prior experience in Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting Detailed Design within shipbuilding industry, manufacturing or other heavy industries environment, while working on projects involving diverse partners. Experience working with classification society requirements. Previous shipyard experience is highly desired and marine industry experience is preferred. Experience working with a diverse integrated project team is considered an asset. Knowledge of marine Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting design, including detailed knowledge of hull outfitting and interior outfitting systems and production best practices. Knowledge of the following ship types is considered a strong asset: icebreakers, research vessels, multi-purpose vessels, fishing vessels, naval auxiliary vessels. Knowledge of icebreaker specific Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting systems or experience with icebreakers vessels design and/or construction would be an asset. Demonstrated ability of working independently to develop solutions to sophisticated technical problems. Above average analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process. Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports. Knowledge of MRP, purchasing and management systems is a plus. Proficiency with AutoCAD is required. Experience with Cadmatic would be an asset. Good organizational skills, above average communication skills including written, verbal, listening and presentation are required. Availability and willingness to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the employer determines is necessary or desirable to meet its business needs. Salary/Rate Range: $44.50 - $55.00 per hour
