What we are looking for :

  • Minimum 5-10 years of progressive environmental, health and safety experience, preferably in the chemical manufacturing industry.
  • Professional certifications an asset (e.g. CRSP, P. Eng, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement EHS management systems and compliance programs.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario and federal EHS legislation.
  • Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel and SharePoint.
  • Sound organizational skills with the ability to manage a constantly changing workload.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels of an organization.

Job Duties :

  • Ensure compliance with operating permits for air (ECA) and surface water discharges, and climate change mitigation legislation. This includes completing associated regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Maintain the site-wide fugitive / fence-line ambient emission monitoring, community odour sampling programs.
  • Supervise LANXESS’s environmental technicians conducting process waste water, surface water and groundwater remediation sampling and analysis activities.
  • Manage the classification and off-site disposal of waste materials, assuring compliance with legislative requirements including preparation of the required waste audit and reduction work plan.
  • Provides information on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to both the Global Business Unit and Regional HSEQ reporting portals and information requests
  • Co-chair the Joint Health and Safety Committee, ensuring Committee involvement in incident investigations, process and equipment inspections, process hazard analysis, pre-task hazard assessment, job safety analysis and follow up of safety issues/recommendations.
  • Manage day-to-day activities associated with LANXESS’s life critical (i.e. confined space, hot work, line breaking, elevated work, electrical safety, LOTO, crane safety, excavation) and other safety procedures.
  • Facilitate investigation of EHS incidents, ensuring that root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented.
  • Lead, and/or participate in the evaluation and mitigation of operational risks utilizing process safety management methodologies such as Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) and Pre-start Safety Reviews (PSSR).
  • Drive continuous improvement in the RC 14001 management system through the identification and control of EHS aspects & impacts, and the development and implementation of related policies and procedures. Oversee the development and maintenance of an integrated management system designed to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory and LANXESS requirements, as well as ISO RC14001 and the chemical industry’s Responsible Care® initiative.
  • Manage salary HSE staff at Elmira site, ensuring targets are set and reviewed to help the site achieve excellence in HSE programs.
  • Develop and, where appropriate, deliver relevant EHSS training programs to employees, contractors and visitors.
  • Provide input into development of the capital and EHSS expense budgets particularly waste disposal, and monitor/control spend as applicable.
  • Work with the site’s leadership team to ensure EHSS staff meet their identified goals and objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, regional and municipal legislation governing the environment, health and safety (for Elmira). This includes but is not limited to: Environmental Protection Act(s) and regulations; Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations; Controlled Products Act and regulations (i.e. WHMIS); and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Act and regulations. Develop, implement and maintain site specific policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Provide oversight for the Chemical Industry Association of Canada's (CIAC) Responsible Care initiative. which includes supporting the company’s outreach efforts by attending community meetings, participating in CIAC committees, addressing other community and regulatory concerns, and working with corporate groups on product stewardship concerns.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for the LANXESS Fire Brigade to ensure resources are allocated and utilized appropriately by the group
  • Report incidents/action items on LANXESS INO, incident reporting and AAA databases.
