Here we grow again! Named one of Canada’s fastest growing companies for the 7th consecutive year, Sweets from the Earth, is looking for a R&D Specialist with experience in food manufacturing, to join our R&D team!

As a proud plant-based manufacturer, we boast a reduced-footprint operation compared to conventional food manufacturers. We are a customer driven organization catering to special diets and allergies while focusing on sustainable agriculture and the green food industry. Areas of focus are Vegan, Nut-free, Gluten-free & Sugar-free.

This is a fast-paced position, and involves a high degree of research, trials, and organizational skills to help resolve production challenges. It also requires spending majority of the time in production to ensure quality specifications are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Resolve challenges related to quality, consistency, and efficiency on production floor
  • Troubleshoot issues arising from equipment, ingredients, and environmental factors
  • Run plant trials and first production runs
  • Assist in designing and executing benchtop trials and analyzing data to make sound technical recommendations.
  • Scale benchtop trials up to production sized batches
  • Support Operations and QA to resolve ingredient, formula, and process issues
  • Spot check the quality and depositing weight of products during production on an ongoing basis
  • Communicate quality issues and observations with Management
  • Communicate and present findings and suggestions to other R&D team members and stakeholders.
  • Investigate, report, and make recommendations on technical issues
  • Improve product quality and operational efficiency through on-going review of formulation and process parameters
  • Perform positive release and sensory evaluation of all products after baking on a regular basis
  • Ensure tight deadlines are met or exceeded, and customer specifications are followed
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned

Education and Qualifications

  • Experience with GF baked and unbaked products (bars, balls), including those with high protein and high fat content
  • Experience with traditional wheat-based baked goods
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Food Science / Food Engineering / or related Science (e.g. Food Chemistry, Chemical Engineering)
  • Five years of experience in commercial bakery is required
  • Experience in plant-based industry is an asset
  • Experience with leading new products through testing, trialing, and commercialization
  • Resourceful and strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to execute solutions rapidly
  • Exceptional sensory skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Self directed individual with initiative, motivation, and positive attitude
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to represent the company and product development team in a professional manner
