Support Worker - Breaking Free from Family Violence

The Native Women’s Centre provides a secure, empowering environment for women and children fleeing domestic violence and for women suffering from homelessness, addiction, or human trafficking. The Breaking Free from Family Violence Support worker will support Indigenous women in a culturally rooted, holistic way and assist women in navigating through the complex systems encountered when experiencing violence and involvement in child welfare matters.

Wage : $21.00/hr. + Benefits following successful probation period

Responsibilities :

  • Build dependable, reliable, and trustworthy relationships with women and mothers, while preserving their dignity and promoting a holistic approach among all service providers
  • Ensure the rights of the mother and child are both upheld
  • Comprehensive approach to addressing and eradicating violence against Indigenous women and their children
  • Enhance and provide supports across service areas that are designed to meet the unique needs of Indigenous women who are involved with both the child welfare systems and violence against women sectors
  • Provide services to Indigenous women, their children, families, and communities by creating wrap around services and supports that meet their cultural, mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual needs

Qualifications :

  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in social work, Indigenous learning, and/or women’s studies
  • Knowledge of the child welfare and justice system pertaining to violence against Indigenous women.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of victims’ issues on child welfare, violence, crisis management and stabilization.
  • Community advocate with experience providing services to Indigenous women, families, and/or communities.
  • Strong facilitation skills to address large groups to raise awareness on child welfare and violence issues
  • Ability to create and maintain a confidential, welcoming, friendly, and safe environment for community members.
  • Established relationships with service agencies; ability to network and create/maintain these relationships
  • Strong communicator - written/oral; organization/time management to meet with time-sensitive outcomes
  • Ability to compile statistical information to prepare quarterly report, strong computer skills.
  • Valid G Class Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle with appropriate insurance
  • Current valid vulnerable sector Criminal Background check is required; willing to acquire 1st Aid/CPR.
  • Willing to travel and to work flexible hours to meet with shifting priorities

Job Type : Part-time Part-time hours: 32 per week
