Overview : Sobeys is full of exciting opportunities, and we are always looking for bright new talent to join our team! We currently have a full-time opportunity for a Fresh Produce Inspector to join our team based in Surrey, BC. Our Retail Support Centre is open 7 days a week and this position will work 5 shifts comprised of weeknights and weekends from 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm

Key Responsibilities : As the Fresh Produce Inspector you will:

  • Inspect inbound product according to established Standard Operating Procedures and specifications which includes random sampling and defect identification
  • Reject and document product that does not meet specifications
  • Monitor RSC handling and storage procedures in conjunction with RSC Management (i.e. cold chain management and slotting)
  • Verify weight, temperature, size, pressure test, refractometer test, package and pallet integrity of product
  • Identify superior quality of product and communicate to replenishment
  • Inspect and ripen bananas and avocados (as applicable)
  • Verify calibration of testing equipment (as applicable)
  • Request government inspections and facilitate sampling process
  • Facilitate returns to vendors and complete documentation (as applicable)
  • Provide recommendations to vendors for replacement of rejected product

Skills and Experience Requirements :

  • Ability to understand quality control functions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with category teams, replenishment teams and vendors (as applicable)
  • Ability to work with a team
  • Ability to work in a stress and pressure environment
  • Ability to adapt to rapidly changing environment and workloads
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and multitask while performing under time constraints
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
  • Able to work with and calibrate tools such as scales, pressure testers and pulp thermometers
  • Preferred 1-2 years experience as USDA/CFIA inspector, retail produce manager, private produce Inspection Company, and produce grower/wholesaler or familiarity with USDA and CFIA requirements
  • General understanding of Food Safety Requirements
  • Powerjack certification (training available in house)
  • Ability to determine colors

The salary range for this position in [British Columbia] is [$48,000K - $66,000K per year]. We will consider factors such as your working location, work experience and skills as well as internal equity, and market conditions to ensure that you are paid fairly and competitively.
