Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an ambitious, detail oriented individual for the position of Human Resources Intern, to assist in the administration and research of best practices in the field of Human Resources as they relate primarily to labour relations, compensation, disability management and recruitment.

KEY FUNCTION : Assist in the administration and research of best practices in the field of Human Resources (HR) as they relate primarily to labour relations, compensation, disability management and recruitment.

REPORTING : Under the general direction of the Director, Human Resources and the technical guidance of HR Leadership.

DUTIES :

  • Assist in the research, development, and implementation of policies and procedures based on HR best practices.
  • Assist in the development of Standards of Work (SoW), process mapping, and reference manuals.
  • Review recruitment and termination documentation, and prepare corresponding letters for employees and managers.
  • Assist with employment legislation and case law research as required.
  • Compile and analyze data as required.
  • Assist in the development of organizational charts, forms, and reports.
  • Assist in the creation and revision of job descriptions, and participate in the job evaluation/pay equity maintenance process.
  • Gather and compile documents, and assist in the completion of various surveys.
  • Compose and type confidential correspondence.
  • Complete various ad hoc projects within the labour relations, compensation, disability management and recruitment specialty areas.
  • Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
  • Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
  • Educate and promote health, safety and wellness in the work place.
  • Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND TRAINING :

  • Minimum of a two (2) year Diploma in a Business or Human Resources Management field, from an accredited college.
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Must be working towards or has a current Certificate as a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP).
  • Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE :

  • Recent and relevant experience working in a unionized environment is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES :

  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant HR legislation and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and convert data into useful information for decision-making.
  • Demonstrated training, experience or utilization of lean methodology for process improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently identify issues, plan improvements, measure success and continue improvement.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook) and patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage routine correspondence, multiple tasks/projects, diversified workload and rapidly changing priorities and challenging deadlines.
  • Demonstrated discretion and maturity when handling confidential information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the safety of co-workers and patient
