The Community & Family Services Worker assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army Milton KHI Community and Family Services. This position also provides support to the Food Bank Program and other programs provided to the Family Services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES : Client Services and Programs

  • Exercising empathetic care, assist individuals to determine appropriate and mutually agreed upon goals and facilitate effective problem-solving behaviours of the client and family.
  • Network with referral agencies and/or other community sources to coordinate wrap around support for clients.
  • Provide spiritual support to clients.
  • Refer clients for pastoral support when required.
  • Periodically review assistance guidelines with the Corps Officer.
  • Oversee the activities of the food bank, organize, and ensure that the food bank is tidy and clean, adequate stock levels, sort and process donated goods and process clients through the food bank.
  • Assist with food drives and pick up of community donations as needed.
  • Arrange for proper disposal of items received but not useable in the food bank.
  • Oversee, support and where applicable participate in the following seasonal programs provided by the Community and Family Services i.e., Christmas Hampers, Camp Programs; aid with other programs as required.
  • Recruit and register children and youth for the Salvation Army provincial camping programs.
  • Follow up with children and youth who attend The Salvation army summer camp programs, including their families, I order to build relationships and establish active links with Corps and its missions and ministries.
  • Direct and supervise work of volunteers working in the food bank and other family service functions.
  • Actively promote Milton KHI Community Church and Community and Family Services programs to food bank clients.
  • Work with other Family Services staff to maintain, promote and improve the profile of The Salvation army Milton KHI Community Church and Community and Family Services programs within the community.

Finance & Administration

  • Maintain written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information in Linked to Feed and on The Salvation Army’s computer system while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Prepare and provide statistical reports and monthly statistics as necessary for SAMIS reporting.
  • Make bank deposits and complete reconciliations as required.
  • May provide input to Supervisor into operational budget.
  • Prepare and distribute brochures to organizations throughout the county promoting services.
  • Follow direction on the compliance and adherence to Operating Policies and Procedures (i.e., gift cards, vouchers, etc.)

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that the Community & Family Services and Food Bank area is tidy in relation to appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Seek out continual education and resources for all areas of responsibilities, specifically regarding COVID-19 requirements as per the local Health Unit.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of the ministry unit by maintaining cleanliness and food safety etc.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other related duties as required.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

  • This is a casual relief “elect to work” position with no standard weekly hours of work.
  • There are no guaranteed hours; work will be offered as per the Community & Family Services hours of operation Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with a 30 minute unpaid lunch break.
  • The working conditions are such that in order to meet the operational needs of the job some flexibility is required as it relates to hours of work.
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
  • This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting and standing position for periods of time.
  • Dealing with difficult people and verbal abuse.
  • Ability to lift/move 20 - 29 pounds.
  • Some travel, up to 10%, can be required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma, Social Service Worker, counselling, or equivalent in a related field of study.
  • Current Safe Food Handlers Certification and First Aid/CPR Certification is required.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certificate would be an asset.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE :

  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons with mental health issues.
  • Knowledge of community-based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
