Job Overview: 

The Corporate Accountant position is an integral part of the Corporate Finance team. This role will participate in and support month- and quarter-end close procedures, including preparing journal entries, working papers, and account reconciliations. This role is also responsible for the accounting for all aspects of Property, Plant and Equipment, Intangible Assets, and Right of Use assets, in addition to administering the formal capital expenditure process referred to as Expenditure Request Authorization (ERA).

This role reports into the Corporate Finance team and reports directly to the Sr. Manager, Corporate Accounting. Minimal travel may be required for this role. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

General

  • Prepare journal entries and associated working papers based on month- and quarter-end close checklists. 
  • Prepare bank and other account reconciliations as part of month-end close.
  • Other corporate accounting functions as required.
  • Trade Spend and Deductions 

  • Understand and prepare reconciliations of estimated trade spend for our commercial retail and food service sales
  • Work with deduction coordinator to understand and prepare reconciliations of outstanding deductions and record journal entries related to deduction reserves 
  • Intercompany Invoicing 

  • Prepare manual invoices for our intercompany expenses and reconcile intercompany accounts monthly 
  • Capital Assets 

  • Maintain the Company’s Fixed Asset Master Ledger and records including:
  • Reconciliation and ongoing maintenance of the Fixed Asset subledger; 
  • Preparation of both monthly and ad hoc journal entries for disposals, reclassifications, additions, and depreciation and amortization; 
  • Preparation of monthly reporting packages for stakeholders.
  • Administration of the ERA process, ensuring adherence to Company policy. 
  • Analysis of spend on capital assets in progress against budget. 
  • Support various business departments for capital asset related questions and requests. 
  • Assist with preparation of annual capital asset budget and quarterly forecasts. 
  • Assist with the organization and completion of annual capital asset count and impairment testing. 
  • Assist internal and external audit functions with capital asset testing and inquiries. 
  • Qualifications:

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary Accounting program or other equivalent; 
  • Minimum experience of co-op roles in finance or accounting; additional 1-2 years of accounting experience preferred 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to succinctly and clearly prepare step-by-step working instructions of various tasks; 
  • Ability to effectively diagnose and troubleshoot problems and opportunities as they arise and refer to manager and other stakeholders when needed; 
  • Intermediate or better proficiency with Microsoft Excel including the use of formulas and pivot tables. 
  • Proven ability to quickly learn new IT systems, applications, processes, and procedures; 
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously through strong organizational skills; 
  • Effective time management skills with ability to meet deadlines and prioritize competing tasks; 
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team in order to meet individual and team goals; 
  • Demonstrates a strong attention to detail; 
  • Communicates with a proactive approach by taking initiative; 
  • Strong work ethic and positive team attitude;
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills;
  • Experience with JDE (E1), Reports Now, or Prism would be considered an asset.
