About the Opportunity :

  • The Chaplain reports to the Health Services Manager and provides Pastoral Care to the patients, families, and staff of the Cape Breton Area - Eastern Zone.
  • Patient Care:
  • Visit all patients who are admitted to the hospital/care facility and assess their emotional and spiritual care needs.
  • Prioritize patient visits.
  • Make regular visits to patients who need emotional and/or spiritual support.
  • Make routine visits to the critical care areas - ICU, CCU, ER, NICU.
  • Respond to emergencies ASAP.
  • Respond to referrals made by nurses, physicians, or other health care workers.
  • Know when it is appropriate to offer prayer and to be prepared to do so upon request.
  • Advocate for the patient, if and when appropriate.
  • Contact appropriate local clergy/faith leaders with the knowledge and/or request of the patient.
  • Provide spiritual and emotional support to patients through their dying process.
  • Make provision for the administration of the sacraments and/or other religious ceremonies as requested by the patient/family.

Family Care:

  • Available to family of patients
  • Provide emotional & spiritual support.
  • Being present with family of dying patients

Staff Care:

  • Available to staff who may need emotional of spiritual support.
  • Awareness of the stress which is being carried by staff so that pastoral support may be offered if deemed necessary.
  • Respond to staff involved in a critical incident and/or crisis.

Continued :

  • Local Clergy:
  • Develop working relationships with local clergy.
  • Liaison between clergy and patient/family/staff.
  • Upon request/knowledge of patient/ family advise clergy when a patient is failing.
  • Orient new clergy to the registration procedures and the facility.

Administration:

  • Attend multi-disciplinary rounds, advisory committee, chaplain’s staff meeting and case conferences on patients and local ministerial meetings, site management meetings.
  • Needs to be able to read and interpret patient charts.
  • Making observation notes on patient charts.

About You : We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Minimum of one Basic Unit in Clinical Pastoral Education as endorsed by the Canadian Association of Pastoral Practice and Education; additional Units preferred.
  • Affiliated and endorsed by a recognized faith group.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, organization, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to continuing education.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
  • Successful external applicants are required to provide a Criminal Record Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search) to People Services before starting employment and assume any associated costs as a condition of employment.

Hours :

  • Permanent Part-Time (20%) position; 15.00 hours bi-weekly.
  • Travel is required, must have access to a reliable vehicle.

Compensation and Incentives : $26.01 - $35.52 Hourly
